How effective is prayer when in a tough, bleak situation?

I have heard stories of armed robbers deserting their victims empty handed  when they started praying.

My last tough situation was solved with a gun...but God Told Me to carry a gun. (Luk 11:21, Luk 22:36, Rev 13:10, Mat 24:43)

it my give a placebo effect but it doesn't change anything really. because at the end of the day you are talking to yourself.
