Why do "health experts" suggest thawing a turkey in the refrigerator?
Its about non-sensical as putting peanut butter on pizza... IT DOESN'T WORK! It took about a week to thaw!

Bacteria will grow in temperatures between 40° F and 140° F. Thawing the turkey at 38° is the quickest safe way to get the bird ready to cook. If you want to babysit it in a sink full of water, and monitor the temperature of the water to make sure it doesn't go above 40°, that is theoretically safe but takes a lot of patience.

Because those "health experts" are hoping a ... know nothing yahoo won't give themselves food poisoning by leaving a turkey sitting out for two days.
Turkeys are so big that if you just leave them out on the counter to thaw the outside comes to room temp long before the inside is thawed and becomes a FEAST for all sorts of nasty bacteria.

I've never heard a “health expert” suggest anything of the kind. It's not something they’d be interested in.
The safest way to defrost frozen food in in the refrigerator and yes, a turkey will take a long time especially if it's a large one. If you have the space for it in you fridge though it's still the best way to do it.

Thawing a turkey on the counter means that by the time the center is thawed, the surface is crawling with salmonella, and if the turkey isn't cooked properly, you are going to have food poisoning, guaranteed. Thawing it in the bottom of your fridge is the best way to go.

Of course it works. It just doesn't work for impatient people. Mine was perfectly-thawed in five days.
