Hip hop is a genre of music. Pop music is just music in general that is popular.

Pop music (to me) is about singing, harmonies, melodies and often good beats as well.

Hip hop is a lot more words, rhymes, vibes and cool beats, which often lack harmony and melody, imho.

Pop music is usually what makes the top 40. Hip hop is focused on mainly faster beats, "talking" lyrics, and mainly African American singers.
