It is possible to braid hair when it is rather short. Depends on your definitiion of what a braid is.

I have braided hair that was only a few inches. This would sometimes be called corn-rowing.... or French braids. So even with layered hair, you CAN braid it! I would venture to say that most people have hair long enough to braid; maybe not the way you wanted, but possible.

50 feet. Anything else and the braids wont come out right.
