If there is exchange then it is not gift giving. 

One does not give a gift in order to receive one.

I think exchanging gifts at Christmas is a fairly modern thing.

As Vergilius said, "Beware the Greeks bearing gifts."

I'm sure they weren't the first ever to start the tradition but the Greeks' practice of 'xenia' was a well known aspect of their culture.
