How often should a hamster go in their ball?

I want to make sure that my hamster is getting enough exercise. He is about six months old.

I actually think that play pens are better than hamster balls. This way, they can run around and play with toys.

My little boi used to go in his ball every two days. And he stayed pretty healthy. But sadly he passed abut a week ago.
