A body moves in a straight line with constant speed unless acted upon by a force. To get a centripetal acceleration we must apply a centripetal force. Otherwise the object will not move in a circle ( as per a car trying to go around a corner on black ice)

The answer they probably want is "d". They are clearly stuck in some sort of Newtonian paradigm. Sometimes the centripetal acceleration is caused by the string tied to the bucket.
