Why are homophobic people said to be closet cases ?

Because, more often than not, they are.
They are raised on a society where it is no acceptable to be homosexual so feel a great hatred those that can live freely and openly gay.
See Gangster Ghost for a prime example.

People try to dominate and control what they can’t have sex with.
If you think about it being a powerful homophobe is the perfect way to dominate those you like. If you were closet gay

I think it's all bs. They're taking an insult and then insulting the insulter by saying he (or she) is gay. It's all mind games cuz they don't have any good come backs.

Many are but not all. Some homophobic people are this way because of misguided religious principles or because the part of the world they live in is pretty anti lgbt. Anyway - studies have been done showing that many homophobic people are in fact gay. These studies came out a few years back. Being gay is very hard, you can’t change it. This is why we have high teen suicide rates. Anyway, you can accept your orientation or you can deny it. Many people in denial become vicious haters. They go of their way to pick on lgbt people so that they can prove to the world and themselves they are straight. If a group of guys is going to be anti lgbt - it’s usually because there is a ring leader who stoking the hatred and getting everyone riled up or insecure. One on one most straight guys have no problem with lgbt. Its just when they are in a group and could be picked on for not being masculine that they can get defensive. So this gay man in denial will become a vicious ring leader. Often straight guys who happen to be a little effeminate will be his victims too. Kind of ironic I know - a closet case picking on a straight guy for being gay - but it happens.
This is why it is important for lgbt to come to terms with themselves. This is why prides are important. This is why bullying should never be tolerated.
