Can a girl fall with a guy because she feels sorry for him?

Hypothetically speaking a girl falls for a guy who is not just handsome but doesn't even understand how handsome he is, who is poor, lost his parents, his working hard and saving to earn money so that he can build his own house back home. A girl looks into his sad eyes and falls for him. Would that be realistic?

Pity is never something upon which to base a relationship. But then again neither is being "handsome". I'd say this "girl" (who apparently isn't a woman yet) has some growing up to do before she's emotionally prepared for a real relationship.

I'm sure it's happened, but I seriously doubt it happens on any sort of regular basis.
