What does 'indiscretion' refer to in this context?

"They reported that Carlo’s police trouble was a youthful indiscretion with a gun, not serious, that could easily be wiped off the books to leave the youth with a clean record."

Is it the same as offense? So basically Carlo got in trouble for the illegal possession of a firearm?

They are playing down the police issue as Carlos being a stupid kid not knowing better than to be caught with a gun, and that more than likely there would be no permanent record. It would not be considered to be as serious as an offense, more like a kid getting hauled up on the carpet for doing a stupid kid-thing.

A youthful indiscretion is a mistake or error in judgment made when young.
