Can the French defend themselves if they get invaded again?

Well sure, why not? I assume you've fallen for our American stereotype of the French as cheese-eating surrender monkeys. The fact is that historically, the French were badasses on the battlefield. But in WWI they bore the brunt of the German offensive on the Western front, just as Russia did on the Eastern.
That destroyed Tsarist Russia. France survived, but the experience kicked the sh*t out of French enthusiasm for war. They built some awesome defenses on the German border, but in WWII the Germans simply went around them, bltizkrieged Belgium, and caught the French wrong-footed. It's hard to blame a country for collapsing when it's been blindsighted like that and its capital is fairly near the border.

They are being invaded as we read this. This time it's by Muslims who are committing terrorist acts and causing riots throughout France.

They have always been able to defend themselves, so why not now?
They are a high ranking powerful member of NATO.
Even the American had to give up in Vietnam, a country that the French also tried to subdue, also without success.
"if they "get" invaded again?" "were" is the word you are looking for.

It is a different world these days and countries rely on friendly countries to come to their aid if they are attacked. France would likely need help if a strong enemy invaded as they have such a long border to protect. There luckily is no country in Europe big or stupid enough these days to try an invasion. Russia is the only country that has any chance of being an invader to France but its military is a shell of what it was 30 years ago. Russia still tries to look impressive military wise and is still a nuclear nation but the truth is it a poor nation with a low GDP for its 144 million people which means it would struggle to support a large invasion army of the size needed to invade France.
Germany has learned its lesson after losing 2 world wars that economically destroyed its country for many years. The Germany of today is a far cry from the war like country it was during the first half of the 1900s

We've come to their aid twice already. And today France has a hateful contempt for Americans who died saving their arses from the Germans a second time. If they get invaded again, my thoughts are: screw 'em. If they STILL cannot defend themselves, and once again get occupied, tough tooties.
NO! We will go through their lines like 'Sh*t through a little tin horn'. Rule Britannia.

Depends who is invading. I think they'll be alright if it's a country like Tajikistan.

There will be mushroom clouds if France gets close to defeat.
Most experts would rank the French military as being one of the ten most powerful in the world, it's currently in seventh place by the most often cited source, ahead of both the UK and Germany. The world has changed drastically since the last time another country attempted to invade France. The odds that anybody would attempt to do something like that are essentially slim to none. France is a NATO nation. I can't imagine that any government would be willing to take on all of NATO just to have a go at France. Not to mention that France is a major military power with the ability to project that power across the globe. They're a nuclear armed state with a modern military. Even without help, they're pretty formidable as far as potential enemies go. Invading a country with whom you share a land border is a far cry from invading a country that you don't. And just to let you know, when discussing hypothetical situations we use "could", not "can", subjunctive mood and all that.
