You're kind of looking at it,  right now.   Social media plays a large role in adolescent anxiety and depression,  but not as much as a regular diet containing added sugars like sugar, honey, nectar, juice, molasses, syrups and white flour products (most breads, crackers and pastas).

It's not just sugars without fiber, but also our departure from natural foods has made the average American consuming corn-fed animal products, which are both high in BCAAs and low in tryptophan,  what the brain needs to make serotonin.

So, try eating poultry and fish over red meat bc those actually DO feed the brain exactly what it needs more of.

Same reason they're so prone to anxiety disorders. Ever since the "parenting" craze of the 80s, we've coddled, overindulged & shielded our kids from any kind of negativity. So they grow up unprepared for harsh reality and lack the essential skills of dealing with hardships. By over-protecting them, we actually made our kids weaker, naivé and less capable adults.

People talk more openly about their problems and feelings today, in mental health too. But if you think about it, maybe the internet is one of the reasons. For despite connecting with everyone, at the same time it isolates you and can make you feel inferior.
