Canadians, what is the point of a Governor-General?
You have a Prime Minister and Queen Elizabeth II as head of government and head of state. I understand that the Governor-General is the Queen’s representative, but there is already a Royal Family with people who don’t do much.
Why not get rid of the Governor-General and either have the Queen travel to Canada when needed or get someone from the Royal Family to move to Canada?
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle moved to the US; why not get them to reside in Canada and be the Queen’s representative as needed?

what a dumb question , a governor general is you safety seat , he can fire the prime minister , all the opposition asks only when they prove the prime minister breaks the rules , the governor general gets permission from the queen . the queen of england has the ultimte choice , she fired the sacked the australian prime minter at the governor generals request in 1976 ..because you dont have doesnt mean you can sack a president does it , and i can name 4 that should have been fired .

In Australia 1975 the Governor-General sack the Whitlam Government changing the course of political power in Australian politics.
The Governor-General has the power over PMs in every commonwealth country and does not need the consent of the British Monarch.

You've already answered your question--the GG is the Queen's representative. The Prime Minister is not eh Queen's representative but the political head.

As said, the Governor General is there to represent the Monarch, whoever that might be. The current Queen no longer does long haul flights and when needed, Prince Charles and Prince William etc. show up. Covid allowing.
Harry and his wife first moved to the Vancouver area of Canada, but that was after they had stepped back from any royal duties. They subsequently moved to California (which I believe was Meghan's plan from the start), mainly because Canada wasn't prepared to foot any bill they might have had (security being one).

Read up on the KIng-Byng affair. The reality is that there is no constitutional path to changing this state of affairs because every province would have to agree to it. It's like asking why does the USA have the Electoral College? Because there is not a path to do it differently. You cannot ask the Queen to withdraw her GG because....that would be involving her in politics.
There are people who think Harry would be a lovely GG, probably not going to happen. If it wanted the gig, he would have hung around North Saanich a while longer. He didn't like his royal duties to begin with. How do you think he would like a trip to the Yukon to eat raw whale blubber with the Inuit?

Canada is still under the reign of the royals who live in Britain. This is a true statement. Can you prove otherwise?

The work of the GG is never done. The GG not only reads briefs from the PMO but is also kept up to date on what is happening in Parliament. One of the roles of the GG is to offer advice to the PM. As the queen's representative GG performs all the duties that Queen Elizabeth has.
One of the great advantages in having a GG is that we are never without a government even during an election or the death or resignation of a prime minister. While members of the royal family have served as GG's of Canada it makes more sense for the GG to be a Canadian. If one were to have a member of the royal family be GG of Canada then it would make sense for that person to not likely inherit the throne. You mention Prince Harry. That would be the worst possible choice as up to now he has shown very little interest in performing the duties that would be required of a GG.

The roles of Governor General, in the Commonwealth Realms is to act as the monarchs representative. The point of having this position is to make it easier and quicker for the legislative processes to go from first reading to Royal Assent in the shortest time possible, much easier to have the person responsible for the final task to actually reside in the country.
While it is entirely permissible to have a member of the Royal Family in that position, and it has happened in the past, (Prince Henry, Duke of Gloucester 1945-47 in Australia. Prince Arthur, Duke of Connaught and Strathearn 1911-1916 in Canada). The preference now is to appoint a citizen of the relevant realm.

The Governor General in Canada is the queens representative selected by the royal family on the advice of the prime minister. Nothing happens in parliament unless the GG says so. They sign every law that is passed and they say when parliament sits and when it is dissolved for an election. They have the power to not allow a bill to become law. That is incredibly rare. They are also in communication with the queen. It is a full time job. If someone from the royal family is in Canada then they do these tasks.
