Could someone please help me understand this?

"He had long ago learned that society imposes insults that must be borne, comforted by the knowledge that in this world there comes a time when the most humble of men, if he keeps his eyes open, can take his revenge on the most powerful. It was this knowledge that prevented the Don from losing the humility all his friends admired in him."

What does all that mean??

He had long ago learned that society imposes insults that must be borne,

** This is basically saying that society will label everyone, no matter who they are, without really knowing them. We all do it~ a girl dressed trashy will be called a wh*re, a dirty man will be called a homeless tramp, a fast food worker will be called lazy with no ambition etc. It is cruel, but it is human nature.

comforted by the knowledge that in this world there comes a time when the most humble of men, if he keeps his eyes open, can take his revenge on the most powerful.

**This means that even the lowest in our society can get back at those who mocked them, if they just look for the opportunity and chance.

It was this knowledge that prevented the Don from losing the humility all his friends admired in him."

** This means that the Don valued his friends, and in doing so, refused to lose his humanity and would keep looking for the good in people rather than assume that someone who was different from him was a lesser person than him.

Corleone is a patient man and can withstand things that would cause others to lose their cool. This is why he is successful. He can do this, because he knows he will win out in the end. Elsewhere we are told that the Don will do things for his 'friends' as favors - and in turn they will help him when he needs it. The humility is something of a conceit - he is powerful and he knows it - but he has no need to be arrogant.

Life is tough, so don't cry about it, just wait for the opportunity to pay back those who have wronged you; good things come to all who wait, as the old adage says.  Take whatever gets tossed at you without reaction, and don't gloat when the reverse happens and you receive good instead of bad (that will also happen).  Good ole Don Corleone understood that, and lived that way, and people saw it and respected him for it.
