Changing a pro sports team's name is typically a multiyear process to do studies, get rights, print everything, and so on. Because Snyder was unprepared (as he is in all things), they had only a few months to do this, and went with a temporary 'Washington Football Team'. Which is generic, but temporary.
There are about a dozen candidates that were considered to be competitors. None of them are great.

They have a temporary name until they can decide on a new name and obtain the rights to use it.

You have a connection to the internet, but can't look up the NFL to see the team names?
