Can't extend or duplicate displays.?

Question

I have a dell laptop. (Dell Inspiron 15 5567..i.e 5000 series)

I have an old LCD monitor.

I wanted to use that old LCD monitor as a dual monitor setup.

So, I bought a HDMI to VGA adapter(active adapter not connector).

I just figured out that I could only show in either of the 1 monitors, i.e either in my new laptop's monitor or in my old monitor. But I can't duplicate or extend. What to do and how to fix?

> Right-click on an empty area of the desktop, then left-click on Display Settings.

> Scroll Down to the Multiple displays area and select select Duplicate these displays or Extend these displays.
