Registering, for Selective Service, is NOT mandatory anymore.

Like it or not but in the event that the military does need your candy *** to be a meat-puppet. They have this solution.

The good thing is that in the USA. There's plenty of volunteers who take such an onus upon themselves. Also, the military has the pleasure to pick from willing people. Some of use may remember how well the last draft went?

The purpose of registration is to maintain a list in case the government imposes a DRAFT. Selective Service is all about people that DON'T volunteer.

The original purpose was so they could force you to be in the army even if you didn't intend it.  However, that has been illegal for them to do for almost 50 years.

The current purpose is so that you can qualify for certain federal aid to students that is not available to most male citizens who haven't registered.  (Women are exempt.)

The "purpose" of the Selective Service is to show the U.S. opposed the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan at the end of 1979.  President Carter brought back the Selective Service registration requirement as a poke at the Soviet Union's invasion without going to a military response.

That is the ONLY reason.  Yes, it is a database, but it is meaningless.  It is not fully accurate.  It does not include women.  It is full of men who are not eligible for military service.  The information is not used for anything.

In the UNLIKELY event that the US passed a law implementing a draft, the rules would need to be established and the Selective Service system and requirements would need to be totally revamped.

Nobody wants to bring back a draft.  NONE of the military services want one.  The only time it is discussed is when a politician tries to make a point to scare Americans about required military service.

The repercussions for not registering are to make you ineligible for some federal programs and student aid.

You only need to register if you ever want a government job or government loans or grants. Even though Prince Harry's son Archie has duel UK/US citizenship. my bet is that he won't register for selective service in the USA when he turns 18.

If you wish to be eligible for many federal programs, to include student loans, you must register with SS

It has nothing to do with what YOU want. It's what the government needs to have you as a live piece of meat on a data base to put in the meat grinder in case of war.

You register with the Selective Service in case there is a WAR and a DRAFT is called.

Army is NOT the Selective Service. Registering doesn’t mean you join any branch of the military.

It is required by law males between 18-25 register for it. If you don’t there will be penalties. It is a database to be used if an Act of Congress happens and personnel are needed. It hasn’t happened since Vietnam.
