How did people prevent pregnancy in the old days?

In the 1920s-1940s mainly, since there was no birth control pills, etc.

I know that sex before marraige was highly taboo back then, but read that most couples still did it anyways. Overall, how did they manage to be sexually active without people "knowing?" (And also, how did prostitutes not get pregnant?)

In the  1940s we had condoms. I wasn't sexually active before then. Lots of hookers DID get pregnant. There were  few doctors that could be relied on to give abortions.

When they went to get their hair cut the barber would say something for the weekend sir and put a packet of condoms in their pocket.

Oh please tell me you're not that ignorant. People have used birth control measures for thousands of years, undoubtedly since before recorded history.
