possess as property of some sort in a literal sense.  It is a common modern idiomatic use to mean "win by a huge amount", to dominate completely. Its meaning is to own the game or whatever is going on, in effect, and all the other players or participants.  They are subject to your actions. You control them, you own them.  You are the boss, in charge, no one does anything except because you let them.

It is of course, hyperbole, not a real ownership or total control, but one that is so dominant that it is hard to imagine being more dominant.

    It depends on the context.

Nominally it means to possess something and be responsible for it.

In a social context it means that you accept responsibility for dealing with it. For example: You were caught committing a crime, or you failed to fulfil your part of a bargain. Therefore you must deal with the consequences.
