Lord Stanley was obviously for colonialism, was he racist as well?
It is inevitable that this question comes up sooner or later, myself I all for keeping the Stanley for some level of hockey even if some day the NHL does not want it.
On the other hand, Stanley had to know that Roman Catholic Francophones would be contending for his trophy. Therefore, it can spun as Stanley as a promoter of pluralism within the Empire.

Canada became a self governing country within the British Empire in 1967, and wasn't so much colony when Stanley became the Governor General in 1888. Haven't heard anything about his views on colonialism, or race, only that he was a hockey enthusiast.
