Given the function find absolute extrema?
Given f(x)=x^3-12x+1 find the absolute extrema .

It's an odd degree polynomial with a leading coefficient that is positive. Its ending behavior is that it will go up to infinity on the right and down to -∞ on the left.
So its absolute extrema are -∞ as a global minimum and ∞ as a global maximum.
If you take the derivative and set it to zero, you'll find a local minimum and a local maximum but not the absolute extrema.
