how many black beads would there be in a pattern of 66 blue beads   ?

    Here is one formula that you can use:

    black = (blue / 3) + 1

    And, solving for blue in terms of black,

    blue = 3(black - 1)

    Also, the pattern starts with 5 beads, and

    increases by multiples of 4 beads. That's always

    going to give you an odd number, so 48 beads

    is impossible.

    2 black => 3 blue

    3 black => 6 blue

    4 black => 9 blue...(not 8 as you say)

    5 black => 12 blue

    blue = 3(black) - 3

    or, blue = 3(black - 1)

    so, with 10 black beads we have:

    blue = 3(10 - 1) => 27...(not 25 as you state)

    When there are 66 blue beads we have:

    66 = 3(black - 1)

    so, black - 1 = 22

    Hence, black = 23

    For the total beads we have:

    5, 9, 13, 17,...

    All odd numbers, so will 48 appear in this sequence??
