What kind of speed controller would work for 1.5hp single phase induction motor?

I want to lower the rpm to quiet the operation. it doesnt need to run at full power.

lowering the rpm to approximately 1500 would reduce the noise by more than 20dB

it is an air compressor with a large capacitor one phase induction motor

It is probably not the motor making the noise, It is the compressor.

You would need to change the frequency of the power source which will cause a loss of torque which will cause starting problems. All you're going to do is stretch out the time it takes to fill the tank with little change in the noise. If you need to silence an air compressor, put it in a cabinet - but make sure the unit doesn't overheat.

The compressor is making the noise.
