What does it mean to be austere?

    Not flamboyant, not 'Hello, how's it going?" with everybody.

    I would not go as far as "strict and unyielding" - that seems actively unpleasant. 

    "Austere" is more of a quiet unworldliness.

  • strict  and  unyielding … like  nurse-ratched  on  "one flew over cuckoo's nest".
