I like to make a salad with leaf lettuce, sweet onions, a hard boiled egg sliced, an avocado sliced, and various other ingredients like cherry or grape tomatoes, or sliced tomatoes, crumbled Feta or goat cheese, marinated Greek or Italian olives. You can also cut up multicolored bell peppers or the mini ones. For a simple dressing you can use olive oil with balsamic vinegar or with wine vinegar and basil, oregano and crushed garlic or you can make a ranch dressing with buttermilk and mayonnaise plus chopped up chives or the green ends of green onions. Then there are many things that some people add such as radishes bacon bits are not real healthy but a few well done ones could could be used for a salty touch but too much salt is not healthy.

Salads aren't necessarily healthy.  It depends on what is added to the greens AND the salad dressing.

It depends on what you are going to eat.

I can make a Very healthy salad or I can turn it into a meal that has the same number of calories as a steak and potatoes or other high calorie meal.

The ingredients that you use and how much of each will determine calorie count per serving.  Look up any recipe and figure out how to make it "healthier" Cut fat, increase fiber, decrease portion size.

Kind of a broad based question. Salads are usually raw. Healthy foods are usually Fresh, without oil or fat.  Narrow it down.

Healthier cooking is all about making specific choices. A salad in and of itself is not ncessarily healthy (e.g. ranch drenching mentioned below), but raw foods do generally contain more nutrients than their cooked counterparts.

There are healthier choices one can make during cooking that makes things healthier. Such as ingredient choices, balance, and cooking methods.

Cooking Methods: Dry or Water cooking is generally healthier than oil based. Meaning Roasting, grilling, boiling, or steaming are generally healthier than frying, sauteing, etc. Granted, if you add oil to stuff before grilling, roasting, steaming, it doesn't help. Meaning a baked chicken pot pie is definitely not healthy.

Ingredient choices: Nutrient dense choices are often better and then lower or better fat proteins. Like spinach is better than lettuce, mashed carrots are better than sweet potatoes which are slightly better than potatoes, and many more choices. Lean fish, chicken breast, and lean beef (like tenderloin or flank) can be the better option.

Ingredient substitution: If you are really trying to buy healthy, you can look at things that substitute a healthier option. Like a ranch dressing made with yogurt, rather than Mayo. Low-sodium, reduced fat, reduced sugar options are all abundant. Don't fall for sugar-free chocolate though, as they can increase the fats on them to make them still taste good.

Balance: You actually do need fat so your body feels full. So, you don't want to cut it out completely. You should look for ways to get the right balance. Don't be too protein heavy, or carb heavy, or even fruit heavy (high in sugar). Think of keeping things in balance.

So, healthiest meal options might be chicken vegetable soup, steamed fish with steamed veges, roast turkey dinner (don't go crazy on the carbs of mash potatoes, stuffing or mac and cheese), Grilled lean beef with some vege skewers, and of course, those lightly dressed salads.

Salad is only healthy if you don't drench it in dressing, especially "ranch".  There are lots of healthy recipes, but fish is one of the best.
