"Why did you do that, it's so unexpected" "Why did you do that, it's so unexpecting"  Are these two correct? ?

    Why did you do that?  It was so unexpected! 

    The second phrase you post is just not grammatically correct at all.

    The first version is correct, the second is wrong.

    I find it hard to imagine any circumstances in which I could use 'unexpecting'.

    The second sentence is wrong. Both sentences would sound ok and mean the same thing if you were to write the following:

    "Why did you do that? That was so unexpected."
