What does "engraved illustration" mean exactly here?

"Like Hutcheson, Smith took an interest in the university’s administration, overseeing its finances as ‘Quaestor’ and serving as Dean and Rector. He was thus in a position to ensure that the university library bought the first seven volumes of the famous French Encyclopédie edited by Denis Diderot and Jean le Rond d’Alembert, a monument of the European Enlightenment whose entry for ‘Pin’ featured an engraved illustration of the famous pin factory."
