A sentence in Tortilla Flat: "Pilon, by the way, is something thrown in when a trade is concluded--a boot".?

This is used as a joke by Danny to describe Pilon's (he is a friend of the main character, Danny) characteristics. Steinbeck uses Pilon to criticize selfishness and capitalism. But, I don't get it. My question is what "boot" means here. If a pilon is a gratuity one pays in a concluded trade, why is there a "boot" here? Thanks a lot! I want to translate this into Chinese.
