    Three chains, each 18 feet in length, are linked end to end.

    3 * 18 = 54 feet

    two longer chains of equal length are added to make a total length of 100 feet

    2c + 54 = 100

    Subtract 54 from both sides

    2c = 46

    Divide both sides by 2

    c = 23 feet <––––––
