The book called The Hermits Story?

Has anyone read this book? If so, how does the snipe situation shed light on that of the human characters in the story?

By shining a torch on them. The Snipe Situation, the strangely-named hero of the story, has the even stranger hobby of helping people see in the dark. For instance, he'll go into people's homes and switch on the lights for them, or light a match to stop them bumping into the walls in a dark cellar, and all that. He's really quite a character. Totally insane, but there you go. Hope this helped.
