What year was the Spanish flu detected before it became a pandemic in 1918?

The first known case was in 1918 in Kansas. However, there's a possibility that cases of British soldiers in France who had contracted an unusually fatal respiratory illness were the same thing. It wasn't detected as the Spanish flu at that time though.

I'm not sure I understand the q. History has recorded 1918 as the yr. of the Spanish flu onset. The first known case was reported at Camp Funston in Fort Riley, Kansas, on March 11, 1918.
