    They’d just DIE..

If Americans saw them with messy hair.

they still needed the googles to be able to SEE their targets.

I doubt the leather skull caps were much protection crashing their plane into a steel ship-

  • so  officials  couldn't  accuse  'em  of  sleeping  with  the  enemy?

What they wore on their heads hardly qualified as a helmet! It was cloth and fitted with head phones. A set of goggles was also pretty standard.

By the way- they did not wear parachutes either.

Pilots wearing real helmets was a jet age thing. If you look at pictures of flight crews and fighter pilots of WWII in any air corps you will see that no one wore helmets. Head covering to keep the ears from freezing and most of the head covered yes- but a real helmet, no.

Most likely for communications, so they could hear the radio earpieces over the engine noise.

Habit and keeping their head warm (they did not have heat) would be two.
