    I think B is the answer, since Byzantium (later Constantinople, later still Istanbul) is hundreds of miles from Rome and Italy.  Admittedly Byzantium did take over the role of the head of the Eastern Roman Empire when the Roman Empire split up.

    A. Roman art & architecture was there (Rome). – the Renaissance did not begin in Rome, look to the northern cities.
