    s = number of small boxes

    s + 3 = number of large boxes

    -----------------------

    Each small box can hold 25 books and each large box can hold 50 books.  altogether can hold 450 books

    25s + 50(s + 3) = 450

    Distribute

    25s + 50s + 150 = 450

    75s + 150 = 450

    Subtract 150 from both sides

    75s = 300

    Divide both sides by 75

    s = 4 <–––– small boxes

    s + 3 = 7 <–––– large boxes
