Stowaway incident:  Hampshire police call in the Royal Navy?

NINE hours after authorities first became aware of an incident onboard the Nave Andromeda oil tanker just off the Isle of Wight, the ship continues to go around in circles with the condition of the captain and crew unconfirmed.

It is being reported that the police have now requested military assistance and I understand that seven stowaways became violent this morning when they were discovered by the crew.

Is it normal for these matters to go unresolved for nine hours?  What have the authorities been doing all this time?  There's been police helicopters above and the coastguard chopper also but no action.

When the Navy turn up can we expect a swift end to this incident and the crew home to their loved ones in time for dinner?

The SBS dealt with it in 7mins apparently.

  • The SBS were part of a successful operation to contain the situation.

I expect the stowaways are on their way to an all expenses paid new life in the UK.

Can we expect more of this, now it's getting a bit cold for dinghies across the Channel ?

It would almost certainly be the Special Boat Service. The Home Office has just announced that the incident is over.

It wouldn't be the Hampshire police.  Any incidents in a port are the responsibility of the Special Branch, who are a different lot.
