Is retail a good career?

if you want to do supervisor or management in retail, it is. for the average staff worker, it's usually not enough to make a living.
some retail may have commission jobs. where if you do good in sales, you could make more there than you do just on normal wages.

Retail is a good career for some people but not for most.
The average retail position is low-paying. That's not a problem for everyone. But it could be a problem for you.
The average retail position is very customer oriented. Only a real people person could possibly enjoy it. And only a patient person could do it for any length of time as customers can be. . . annoying. . . at times. If you work your way up and become a manager, then you not only have to deal with customers (often the ones who are complaining) but also a staff that is young and sometimes irresponsible. And that can be really difficult!
Another thing to consider has to do with the product(s) you would be selling. If you love clothes, then a job selling clothes would be much more enjoyable than one selling auto parts. But it is not always so easy to choose. There are always a limited number of positions available, and people often get stuck in the first job that comes along.
Finally, consider the hours. Typically, in retail, people work a wide variety of hours. One day may be 8-4. The next day may be 12-8. One week you may have Tuesdays and Wednesdays off. The next week it could be Saturday and Sunday. Often, with retail jobs, the hours and days vary from week to week and there may be very little choice.
Typically, retail is not really a career. It is just a job people fall into who don't have the skills to get something better paying. However, if you have a natural ability for it and work where you get paid by commission, you could a decent salary.
Hope this helps!
