Did people only see black and white in the 1940s and 1950s?

Movies, TV shows and documentaries were all in black and white back then. I just want to know if people's vision back then was restricted to only seeing black and white. Why is is that we can see colour now? Does evolution have something to do with this?

    By that reasoning, before there were movies, TV shows and documentaries, people couldn't see at all.

    Yes. But it was really tough in the days before talking pictures. Everybody had to be a lip-reader and there were pianos playing dramatic music around every corner.

    Sadly, before the invention of TV, movies, and documentaries, people couldn't see at all.

    This was known as the Dark Ages.

    rose colored glasses were invented.  Now we see in color.

    Things are colour-eyesed now..

    Human underwear has also evolved

    i think they did, i remember when i was a kid, we had tv's that were in black and white
