For colleges, how come there is such a thing like student loans and financial aid?

Why is there such a thing as health insurance or food stamps or housing benefits? I can't imagine that you have ever earned a single cent on your own merit. It can only be assumed that you are provided for by your parents or that you subsist on government money because your mental issues prevent you from being a productive member of society. Perhaps one day when your legal troubles lead to a suspension of your benefits you will be afforded an opportunity to reflect on why these things exist.

Because there’s lots of people who want to get an education but can’t afford to pay tuition and living expenses. Most people without college degrees don’t make enough to afford college. If they get loans and financial aid, they can pay it back when they have a degree and can get a better paying job. Not everyone has rich parents that can drop $50k a year for their education.

For the same reason that such things exist for car and house purchases.
