Why would some people pay extra for an air filter that has a foam backing?

If anything, this foam backing will reduce the amount of air that goes in any given time. These filters with the foam backing only add more to the cost, increase fuel consumption and wear out the engine in a shorter period of time.

Why on earth would we want air filters with the foam backing????

Update:

It's for a 4 cylinder BMW

I agree entirely. It's a marketing con that many fall for. If foam filters worked well on cars they would be an original fitment. Same with crap like Seafoam. How dumb have you got to be to realise that it does nothing at all other than lighten your wallet?

The open-cell foam traps the larger particles so the inner filter is able to work for longer trapping the finer particles. Overall, the filter lets the right amount of air through provided the car is serviced at the proper intervals. The engine management system assures the fuel/air mixture is right for all driving conditions and should set of a warning light if anything needs attention.

My lawnmower has foam around the air filter.  But those are two separate pieces, wash the foam, replace the filter.  Being in one piece doesn't make a lot of sense.  What is your filter for?
