What is the point of doing any more than the bare minimum at a retail job?

A friend of mine was recently fired because she made too much money, and the new management wanted to replace her with someone who earns less money.

She was one of the hardest working people at my store, and always did much more than the bare minimum. What's the point of doing any more than just the bare minimum, if you'll just get shitcanned eventually?

Maybe she would have been fired sooner.  Management notices who works hard and who doesn't.

It's fine if you want to spend the rest of your life on the lowest rung of the pay scale.

Self-respect.  If you are going to do any job, you should do it to the best of your ability.  You only THINK you know why she was let go.  Let's just say no one gets ahead with a bad attitude and only doing the bare minimum.

Get out of retail, it's the worst.
