    Myth-ology would mean "the study of mythical records such as legends or folktales". Many English terms are a combination of a term from one language + Greek or Roman suffix. This more or less belongs in the Language section.

    To answer the question though:

    Well, almost every known mythology is usually the compilation of myriads of stories. Hindu mythology for example would be the -Vedas, -Yanas, -Gita, etc. Although if memory serves me right what composes Hindu "itihasa" or Hindu history, literally "or so it was", would be the Mahabhrata and Ramayana specifically.

    For the same reason that stories from Christianity are called Christian mythology.
