What are the best shotgun shells for home defense?
Is your first shell rock salt? Do you use birdshot? Buckshot?

At typical ranges inside the home, maybe 20 feet, the shot is still just leaving the shot cup when it hits the target and is bunched together fairly tightly. I'd go with #4 shot for the best overall performance. Buckshot if you aren't concerned about penetrating walls.

I can't imagine rock salt. It would rust up your barrel. Bird shot is good enough for most houses. At typical house ranges, the shot acts as a monolithic projection.

At a range of 25 feet or less birdshot is fine.

Nope first shot out is a Yugoslav Anti Personnel load. #5 square shot cubes. Then 2 - #4 Buck, and finally 2 - 12 ball 000 Buck. A couple deer slugs mounted on the gun for reloading to knock the heck out of a car or truck outdoors if needed.
