What does X duration of Cardio actually mean?

does it only count when you are doing the cardio? or does it also count the recovery time?

like say i'm doing elliptical 40 sec straight going as hard as i can then i'd rest/recover for 20 sec then i'd go 40 sec as hard as i can again repeated 30 times for a total of 30mins.

did i do 30mins of elliptical?

or was it just 20mins of elliptical?

30 mins workout - even though not all your time was spent at high intensity. Depending on the intensity of your warmup and cool down, you can even choose to include them as part of your total workout minutes, or not. I've done some video workouts where the warmup was every bit as intense (or moreso) than the workout itself.

You were on the elliptical for 30 minutes.  30 minutes is 30 minutes.
