i was watching ''the godfather'' and one of the characters said that another character was ''hit by the thunderbolt''. what's that mean

    He fell in love with Apollonia so quick. So sudden and hard,it was like being struck by a thunderbolt.

    The quote is "...or if he should be struck by a bolt of lightning..."  Don Corleone was saying to the heads of the other families that if his son Michael was hurt for any reason, even being struck by lightning, he would retaliate harshly
