Is performing 1 pass 35 times as good as a Gutmann 35-pass wipe?

35 is random.
1 pass 35 times is the same.

DOD 3 pass is sufficient

"Is performing 1 pass 35 times as good as a Gutmann 35-pass wipe?" It is exactly as good in terms of security BUT — even a single wipe makes data recovery absolutely impossible. In terms of convenience, however, a single pass taking 1/35 of the time is obviously preferable.
NIST has stated, "...clearing by overwriting the media once is adequate to protect the media...".
