A newborn does NOT know how to talk (not until they reach 2-years of age)....so, to get the attention they need - they must cry.

I can now tell you why babies cry loudly because they are annoyed and they are frustrated because they cannot communicate with a voice that people can understand this makes them angry and frustrated my 3-year-old grandson was a loud crier. And one day it clicked in his head how to understand and talk. He didn't learn to talk gradually one day he developed a perfect vocabulary and started to converse like an adult. And I asked him why he was crying all the time before. And he told me I was mad because nobody could understand me!
