What do hockey players take a hit of on the bench?

Sometimes when I watch hockey, it looks like some of the players are taking a huff out of a small bottle (almost like a medicine bottle) on the bench. What is it? What is its use?

They're smelling salts designed to give them a jolt without putting anything into their body. Can't really go back to the days of coffee and sudy's (Sudafed) or Greenies (stimulants).

Smelling Salts - it's like a wake-up. Be careful when holding it to your nose the first time

and don't be surprised if odor alone gets you a little dizzy, as would excessive caffeine.
