Is there a voting system that’s similar to ranked choice, except all votes are assigned points (1st choice, 2nd choice, etc.) and added up?

In ranked choice voting systems, the spoiler effect is still in play when a candidate reaches 50% of votes on the first round.

Under the voting system I described, all candidates need to rely on garnering 2nd, 3rd, etc. preferential votes in order to get the most points.

In the beginning of the US the 2nd place vote getter became the VP. This only changed with the 12th Amendment in 1804.
