I started my car and it made a noise as if I was changing gear and clutch wasn't down properly.. what could it be? ?

Also I have just tried it again and now it sounds like its going to cut out what could it be?

It could be a stuck bendix gear on the starter.. That  happens when you hold the key on "start" after the engine has started. I wonder also if your car's computer is involved in this.

Could be a weak battery or starter, maybe even battery connections. Have the battery load tested before doing anything else.

The starter is bad. It didn't engage fully with the flywheel and you heard the starter gear grinding into the flywheel. Replace the starter before you end up having to take the transmission out to replace the flywheel.
