Not if you request a donation to your favorite charity in lieu of gifts. But depending on what culture you're from just asking for cash can come off as rude, yeah. There are though plenty of ethnic and religious groups where money is just expected and accommodation is made for that. Maybe set up your registry to where only gift cards appear as potential "gifts". Then at least you'll get the cash equivalent. Or if you're saving up for something like a downpayment on real estate you could always put something in the invitation like, "In lieu of gifts please consider donating to John and Jane's downpayment fund". Make it humorous and you'll have less of a problem.

While most people choose to give a gift to wish the couple well, a wedding is not actually a gift giving event and gifts are not mentioned in invitations for weddings.

Mention of gifts or things in lieu of gifts is an indication a gift is expected or required to attend.  This also includes charitable donations, your choice of a charity to donate to might not be one they would.

Of wedding events only the shower is a gift giving event.

Those who do choose to give a gift for the wedding, most will be monetary gift just simply because it's the easiest thing to do, some though will be a tangible gift.

Your reason for wanting a monetary gift is irrelevant.

Boy you are going to hit hard about this. You NEVER ask for  gifts. NEVER. For any occasion.   You do not mention gifts.  IF and only if someone asks you what you would like as gift then you can tell them money if that works for you.

Most wedding guests give cash , check or a gift card to a wedding.

It's rude to ask for anything - presents are optional, not required.

Yes. You should be thankful that the guest made an effort. He or she might had difficulty when finding a presence for you.

Money itself, yes.  Gift cards to different stores, no...  How many blenders does one couple need, after all?
